The Arc de Triomphe seen from street level on the Champs-Élysées, French flags in the foreground
Avenue des Champs-Élysées, afternoon

1.9 kilometers drawn dead straight by Le Nôtre in 1667, from the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais up to the star where twelve avenues meet. The lower half of the avenue is a garden, not a shopping street, and most visitors skip it. That is exactly why the walk starts there.

The walk ends at the Arc. Climbing it, 284 steps and a separate ticket, is not included, but your guide will show you the ticket office and the pedestrian tunnel if you want to go up afterwards.

The walk, step by step

  1. Place Clemenceau. The meeting point is the statue of General de Gaulle, between the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais, both built for the 1900 World's Fair as temporary pavilions Paris never took down.
  2. The gardens of the Champs-Élysées. Chestnut trees, theaters, the Élysée Palace behind its wall. This is the quiet half of the avenue.
  3. The avenue. From the Rond-Point to the Étoile: the façades, the flagships, the Bastille Day parade route, and why the street slopes the way it does.
  4. The Arc and the flame. Napoleon ordered the Arc in 1806; it took thirty years to finish. Beneath it lies the Unknown Soldier, whose flame has been rekindled every evening at 6:30 since 1923.

Included. A guide for one hour, in English, French or Hindi, confirmation by email right after payment.

Not included. Climbing the Arc de Triomphe (284 steps, separate ticket), food and drinks.
